The temperate regions of the northern hemisphere show cycles of photosynthetic rate, with much more conversion of carbon dioxide to sugar during the summer than during the winter. This depletes the relatively low concentration in the atmosphere, causing the annual cycles. A great deal of the photosynthetic increase will, of course, occur in the sea due to the activities of phytoplankton.
